What does LAN mean?
LAN means local area network, and it is a means of connecting different computers and other devices, such as printers, together so that they can share files.
Does my computer need any special hardware to connect to a network?
Yes. Your computer will need a network card with a cable plug for your network cable. Some computers come with a network port built in.
What hardware do I need in order to set up a network between my computers?
You will need a Network Interface Card (NIC) for each computer that you want to connect, a Switch or Hub, and Cabling.
What type of cable do I need for my computer LAN network?
LAN computer networks use cables with “RJ45” connectors at each end. These are like phone jacks but wider to contain more lines.
Where do I plug in the RJ45 LAN Network cable?
One end of the RJ45 LAN Network cable goes into the back of your computer, into the RJ45 Port on your network card. The other end goes into your LAN Network Hub.
What is a LAN Network Hub?
A LAN Network Hub is an external device with a power supply and a series of LAN Network RJ45 Plugs in it which connect the computers in the network together by means of cables.
